Last year, some very smart people feared that when Swiss scientists turned on the Large Hadron Collider—the largest particle accelerator in history, which is buried under the Swiss Alps—its particle smashing would create a black hole that would consume the Earth. Well, we weren't consumed and the collider starts operating at full power this week. Rutgers professor Matt Strassler explains why it's worth risking global annihilation in the name of scientific advancement, and other things we can only hope to understand.
