Independent art space Coda Culture presents Comfort Zones, an exhibition showcasing works by an emerging local artist Shen Jiaqi. Her works are inspired by her surrounding urban environments in Singapore, which revolves around the various unique social issues she experiences or personally encounters, with inspiration stemming from systemic restrains, societal norms, and cultural expectations.
Her works make use of familiar yellow lines commonly seen in urban environments that serve as a symbol of regulation, with unspoken but communally agreed-upon behaviour being enforced silently and with purpose. These narratives stem from observations of lives led within the lines of societal and personal expectations, and the inhabitants' hopeful wait for the promise of eventual comfort and happiness. The artist uses these yellow lines and their striking colour to represent the presence of the culture of conformity, subconscious psychological restrictions are surfaced.
You'll see everyday scenes in Jiaqi's art, from narrow HDB corridors to shadows created along staircases to clothing lines and common mynah birds – each with a bright yellow hue interlinking the works together.
So pop by Coda Culture's space at Aliwal Street and get yourself inspired by the artist's evocative works. The exhibition runs till September 5 and is open from 5pm to 8pm on weekdays, noon to 8pm on Saturdays and noon to 5pm on Sundays.
