Art exhibitions by international names may have been postponed since the pandemic, but the spotlight has shifted to emerging local artists – and we're living for it. A new exhibition will open at Objectifs, and it features explorations into intimate spaces by four image-based artists from Singapore.
Marvel at works by emerging artists Dylan Chan, Fitri Ya'akob, Masuri Mazlan and Vimal Kumar at With You Here Between: Defamiliarizations. They depict photography in different, more experiential ways, and touch on themes ranging from queer identity and the body, to spirituality and ecology, to yearning for home, and family. A common thread is how their works celebrate living and thriving in the margins.
The show is curated by Elaine Thanya Marie Teo and Tekad Kolektif, the third recipient of Objectifs' annual Curator Open Call. For those unfamiliar with Tekad Kolektif, they are a non-profit art initiative that facilitates artistic collaboration between young art talents and independent artists.
With You Here Between: Defamiliarizations includes an extensive programme comprising opening performances, a curator's tour and artist talk, an open call culminating in a poetry reading featuring five works responding to the exhibition's themes, and three workshops. Don't miss opening performances on September 23, where Fitri Ya'akob will present a performance artwork based on her video installation Akar; while Masuri Mazlan will present a durational performance examining stillness as part of his sculptural photography installation.
