France is known as a “gourmet nation” for good reason. The country is widely celebrated for its world-class cuisine and fine produce – think of the best wine, cheese, and bread in the world and France comes to mind. Worthy of joining the list? French apples.

On November 23, we were invited by INTERFEL (Interbranch Association for Fresh French Fruit and Vegetables) to an event featuring Chef Alicia Wong. Besides munching on pastries made with delicious French apples, we also learned more about the premium produce.

This might come as a surprise, but France is the third-largest producer of apples in Europe. The country is blessed with diverse landscapes, soil, and climate conditions, making it particularly well-suited to producing great quantities of high-quality apples. Nearly 100 apple varieties are cultivated there, including familiar ones like the Royal Gala, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. Vibrantly coloured, crisp, and delicious, French apples are said to be some of the best.

Well, tasting is believing. The next time you’re at major supermarkets like FairPrice and Cold Storage, keep your eye out for apples originating in France. Besides ‘common’ French apple varieties such as Royal Gala and Granny Smith, you’ll also get to buy home unique varieties like the Kissabel, Pixie, and Candine. Brought in by Interfel, these French apples were grown using sustainable and eco-friendly practices too. With French apples, you know you’re sinking your teeth into fresh, healthy and earth-friendly goods.
