Florescence

An exclusive larger-than-life art installation will grace Bugis Street as part of the Singapore Night Festival activities. From 18-26 August 2023, Singaporean illustrator and visual artist, Kristal Melson, will dazzle the Bugis Street multi-storey carpark with her inflatable art installation called Florescence. A tribute to the periwinkle flower, it was once a traded item due to its medicinal properties during Singapore’s early days as a bustling port city. Originally native to Madagascar, the periwinkle can be seen everywhere today.

This particular art piece with its intertwining stems and blooming flowers signifies Singapore's interconnectedness through its people and with prosperity. Not only in its economy but also in the rich cultural tapestry and heritage of the Bugis people. The blooming flowers represent the resilience that arose from the trading of the humble periwinkle back then, illustrating the butterfly effect of how those actions have snowballed into the transformations we see today.
