Peru’s culinary scene has expanded far beyond the borders of the South American country, now enjoyed in restaurants around the world. Though small in size, the humble grape is another of Peru’s biggest and most successful exports: the southern American country is the world’s third-largest exporter of the fruitNo mean feat for a country that produces such a cornucopia of superfoods packed with flavour.

Long days of sunlight and dry conditions make Peru an ideal grape-growing region. Peruvian growers are even able to mature vines 55 percent faster than some neighbouring countries. Grapes are grown in the coastal valleys of Peru, predominantly Piura in the north and the southern region of Ica, where the majority of the country’s vineyards also reside.

While some fruits are harvested for winemaking and to produce the local spirit, pisco—made famous by mixologists the world over in pisco sours—the majority of these bountiful orbs are destined for supermarkets across the globe to claim a worthy spot in fruit bowls and menus near you.

If you want to give yourself a healthy boost, look no further than these sweet, juicy fruits. Grapes are packed with Vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting; immune-system-boosting Vitamin C, essential during the winter months; as well as minerals such as magnesium and powerful antioxidants.

Bursting with sweet flavour, grapes are equally good in smoothies or enjoyed as healthy snacks throughout the day. A pop of natural sweetness adds flavour, texture and colour to simple yoghurt bowls, a sweet boost and crunch to fresh salads, and a welcome addition to any charcuterie board.
