As part of SIFA, the music theatre production Angel Island is a joint effort between Huang Ruo, a music composer, and Brian Gothong Tan, performance director and multimedia artist.
In 1875, the enactment of the Page Act became the first federal immigration law that imposed restrictions, banning Chinese women from entering the United States and subjecting them to detention centres on Angel Island. During their confinement, numerous women found solace by inscribing poetry on the walls, which eventually inspired the music featured in Angel Island. This theatrical performance revisits the themes of immigration, discrimination, and captivity that have been associated with this era, featuring San Francisco-based Del Sol Quartet and award-winning ensemble Taipei Chamber Singers.
