Commemorate Alzheimer’s Month

In conjunction with the the annual World Alzheimer’s Month celebrated in September, the Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation (LAF) has organized a number of events.

The series of celebrations begins with the Run to Remember on September 1st. The five-kilometre run kicks off from the Taj Samudra North Lawn at 4.30pm. From September 22 – 30, an art exhibition titled, “Remember me Sri Lanka” that features Sabine Ferber’s work will be held at the Barefoot Gallery from 10am – 7pm.

The events culminate with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 29. The walk commences from the Angsana Garden, Cinnamon Grand, and will take the participants through the streets of Kollupitiya.

Throughout the month, LAF will seek to bring together communities and raise awareness on how to care and love patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Visit the Colombo International Book Fair

One of the most anticipated events in the month of September, book lovers flock to the Colombo International Book Fair, which sees international booksellers as well as bookshops from around the island congregating under one roof.

A wide variety of books in Sinhala, Tamil and English are on offer with stationery items as well as academic books together with well-maintained second-hand books. Enjoy browsing through the stalls in search of your desired books and take advantage of the discounted prices.

Japanese Cultural Fair – be inspired by the Japanese culture

This September, enrich your knowledge about a vibrant culture and perhaps discover a new hobby. The Embassy of Japan together with the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association presents the Japanese Cultural Fair. The event pays respect to traditional Japanese cultural activities.

On September 15 and 16, visitors to the fair can experience a slice of Japanese culture as masterfully arranged Ikebana, Bonsai plants, origami, kimono and Japanese dolls will be on display. In addition, demonstrations on Japanese tea ceremonies, Ikebana, Origami and Bonsai will allow visitors to actively participate at the event.

Head to watch an English play

Drama is a commentary of life, and the various genres of theatre can entertain and educate simultaneously. Head on over to the theatre this September and witness the graceful performance of veteran theatre actors as they portray characters that stay with you for a long time. Of particular note are the two dramas ‘Our Town’ and ‘Move Over Mrs Markham’, both scheduled to play during September.

Thornton Wilder’s ‘Our Town’ will be played on September 22nd and 23rd at the Lionel Wendt. The 80th anniversary production of Wilder’s play is a reminder to appreciate all the fleeting moments in life.

The comedic plot of ‘Move Over Mrs Markham’ is bound to keep the viewer entertained as the characters embroil themselves in increasingly hilarious situations. The play will be held at the Lionel Wendt on September 1st and 2nd.
