Autumn is here again, and with it our annual celebration of the most exciting city districts on the planet. That’s right: Time Out’s World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods ranking just dropped, featuring a definitive list of the downtown hubs and seaside strips, homely enclaves and warehouse quarters worth living in and visiting right now.

And Tokyo is right in the thick of it once again, with Koenji making it to No 8 on the 2026 edition of the ranking.

As always, the list was curated by Time Out’s global network of on-the-ground experts and ranked by a panel of editors who vetted each neighbourhood against a range of criteria, including food and drink, nightlife, unique local businesses, liveability and community. Koenji scored high on all of the above, but performed especially admirably in the uniqueness and community categories.

No surprise there: as the rest of the city’s outskirts are gentrified at an alarming pace, the former punk scene epicentre, just a few stations west of Shinjuku, flies the flag for resistance. Local residents have long been vocal about their opposition to redevelopment, homogenisation and even the opening of a Starbucks in the area.

While not all their initiatives have been successful – a certain global coffee chain finally set up shop in 2025 – this is still a district that cherishes its identity while letting all flowers bloom. Spend a day exploring its labyrinthine shopping streets, lined with an eclectic, constantly changing mix of used clothing shops, record stores, tiny bars and bakeries, and you’ll find yourself cheering for Koenji’s commitment to keeping it real.

Some of our favourite spots in the neighbourhood include award-winning bakery Shigekuniya 55 and Walnuts, purveyor of lovingly crafted coffee. There’s also Kisho Jinja, Japan’s only Shinto shrine dedicated to the weather deities, the fashion rabbit hole that is vintage store Higan, and the vibrant world of pan-Asian miscellanea conjured up at Zakka Mikansei.

You’ll also want to grab a tempura lunch at Tensuke, soak the afternoon away at communal bathhouse Kosugi-yu, and see where the night might take you at multitasking music café Substore, punk and hardcore haven 20000V or ‘heavy metal dining bar’ Metal Meshi. Meanwhile, Japan’s highest-ranked neighbourhood was actually in Osaka, with Kitakagaya charging up the list to No 6. A bustling shipbuilding hub from the early 20th century until the 1970s, this district on the mouth of the Kizu River has been transformed into a creative haven over the past decade.

Many of Kitakagaya’s former factories, warehouses and vacant buildings have been given a new lease of life as art spaces and artists’ studios, while mural-covered walls, striking sculptures, hidden stencil graffiti and illustrated manhole covers add to the colourful scenery. To explore the area, consult the Time Out Osaka guide to the best things to do in Kitakagaya.

As for the top three, heading up this year’s World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods list is Jongno 3-ga in Seoul, followed by L’Ocean in Rabat, Morocco at No 2, and Neos Kosmos in Athens, Greece at No 3.
