Ah, the ubiquitous KitKat. While the chocolate wafer was born in the United Kingdom, it reigns supreme in the country due to the endless variety of Japan-exclusive flavours and its upscale KitKat Chocolatory in Ginza where you can customise your own treat. Last year, the brand even replaced its former plastic-wrapped packaging with paper bags that can be used for folding origami. When we found out McDonald's Japan is re-releasing the much-loved KitKat McFlurry, which was sadly discontinued in 2013, we ran to our local Mickey D’s for a taste test.

We first noticed that this version of the McFlurry is packaged in a vermillion cup resembling a KitKat wrapper. The KitKat McFlurry comes drizzled with extra chocolate sauce and when mixed together, it tastes similar to cookies and cream ice cream, except with a lovely added texture from the wafer. Upon the first bite, we were pleasantly surprised by the crunch. Even after a good five-minute walk from McDonald’s to the office, the dessert did not melt or become mushy. It's definitely sweet but not as saccharine as we expected it to be.

The KitKat McFlurry is ¥290 and available at all McDonald's in Japan. Get there quick – it's only until early March – as we might have to wait another seven years for another taste.

Got a sweet tooth? Try this decadent KitKat cacao dessert or some chocolate ramen, or go treat yourself at one of the city's top chocolate shops
