Veganism was once foreign to Japan, but we’ve been seeing more and more vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants and cafés pop up around Tokyo in recent years. While many of them offer delicious meals to eat in, sometimes we just need something to grab on the go on busy days.

If you’re a plant-based eater looking to pick up a quick morning breakfast or snack to go, we’ve got you covered. The list of bakeries below offer exclusively vegan goods, including buttery croissants, tarts, cookies, bun, rolls and other pastries that, of course, don’t use any milk, egg, butter or any other animal products.

RECOMMENDED: Best vegan restaurants and cafés in Tokyo

  • Restaurants
  • Daita

From baguettes and croissants to melonpan and aromatic herb focaccia, all the goodies at this vegan bakery are free from eggs, milk, butter and honey. We recommend the amazake roll, which has a naturally sweetened white bean paste mixed with amazake (a sweet fermented rice drink) in the centre of a satisfyingly chewy bread roll. The goods are baked three times a day – early morning, around midday and in the afternoon – guaranteeing bread that is fresh-off-the-oven no matter when you visit.

  • Azabu-Juban

This vegan bakery in Azabujuban ditches the butter, milk and egg to make plant-based creations. It offers around two dozen kinds of bread created by chef Yoshinori Aoyagi who used to work as a chef at Harajuku’s Nansuka Pansuca bakery and even won an award at a baking competition in Asia.

While you can’t go wrong with the classic croissant, we recommend trying its signature shio (salt) butter bread, which has a crispy outer layer with a fluffy inside, and has aosa (sea lettuce) kneaded into it (¥360). If you want something sweet, the decadent nama (raw) chocolat (¥440) is a cube-shaped chocolate brioche bread filled with chocolate ganache.

  • Bakurocho

Ovgo Baker is stocked with an assortment of freshly baked vegan goods like scones, muffins, and banana bread. You’ll find classic American cookies including an old-fashioned chocolate chip and even snickerdoodles, along with Japanese-inspired matcha coconut cookies (¥290 each). There are savoury items, too, like garlic pepper scone-cookies (or scokies, as the bakery calls them; ¥400) and cornbread (¥500). You can pair it with a cup of coffee (¥500), craft tea (from ¥450), or go for a housemade horchata offered in three flavours: plain, chai and blueberry.

This bright, retro-style café that has its windows thrown open to welcome the sunshine is the perfect place to enjoy your baked treats over a coffee. And all the baked goods at Alaska Zwei are vegan. You’ll find everything from sweet to savoury, such as bagels, chocolate cornets, cinnamon buns and muffins. The bakery has quite a selection of creative pastries too; we particularly love the tofu katsu focaccia and miso cream sandwiches.
