Medical experts agree that interacting with animals offers both psychological and physiological benefits, reducing loneliness and anxiety while lowering blood pressure to boot. And it’s been shown to decrease levels of Cortisol—which, since it’s a hormone related to stress, is especially helpful when you’re doing everything possible to not freak the fuck out.

So it makes sense that interacting virtually with animals has become so popular on the Internet. Indeed, you can find all sorts of stuff in that vein, from having play dates with dogs to attending an online birthday party for a sea otter. And don't forget all of those animal live cams that allow you to remotely drop in on cuddly koala bears or lovable giant pandas.

Since 71 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans, however, we shouldn't overlook marine life as a source of solace. In fact, you could argue that watching fish glide around in a pond or in a tank is one of the best things you can do to get your endorphins pumping. There's something about it that’s totally hypnotic and Zen.

But if you don't have a fishbowl or koi pond, don't worry: Many of the country's leading aquariums have live cameras that allow you to get up close and personal with everything from whale sharks to jelly fish. Looking for more virtual-tour goodness? Check out these haunted places, national parks and roller-coaster rides
