Until the middle of the twentieth century, countless boys and girls were forced to suffer in Switzerland: the authorities tore illegitimate children, orphans and children of divorce from their social environment, sending them to farms as labourers. What was intended as a measure to combat child poverty often led to exploitation and abuse. 12-year-old Max and 15-year-old Berteli are “hired out” to the Bösiger family, who are mountain farmers. Here they experience a life of woe. The new village teacher has no chance of preventing the looming tragedy.
