BTS fares won't be doubled up—at least for now

Thanks to Miss Corona, City Hall decides to drop the policy to help us save more money—yay.

On December 16, 2020, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administrator (BMA) shocked Bangkokians by announcing that there would be a crazy BTA Sky Train train fare increase to the maximum of B104 on the BTS Green Line across Bangkok and Pathum Thani, which was expected to put in effect from February 16 onwards. The announcement was met with widespread criticism, to which the BMA interestingly responded that the fare was fair.

However, earlier yesterday (February 8), the BMA issued a statement regarding the inflated fare that the readjustment would be postponed. "The BMA received a request from the government to reconsider the fare increase as the residents are already undergoing financial struggles imposed by the pandemic," wrote governor Aswin Kwanmuang (translated from the official statement, which can be read here).

The statement concluded that the policy would be indefinitely pushed off, which means BTS commuters can—for now—enjoy the same fare peak at B59 before it'd be doubled sometime in the future. Meanwhile, another nice thing the BTS has done for us recently is the launch of the ghost station, Saint Louis (formerly Suksa Wittaya), in the Silom Line after 22 years of haunting Bangkokians in the form of an additional fee without the actual service.

Stay tuned for the update and save money for the hiking price soon.
