Getting the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games off the ground was a bit contentious due to the coronavirus, but it did, finally, push through although a year later. Now, one of the strangest Games in the history of the Olympics—due to the lack of spectators and subdued sense of revelry—is ready to wrap up this weekend.

The last two weeks witnessed exciting matches and competitions among talented athletes from all over the world. Like every edition, records were broken and world-firsts were tallied. Caeleb Dressel from America, for example, won five gold medals in swimming, breaking the world record and marking himself as the sport’s next big star. Meanwhile, Dutch runner Sifan Hassan made everyone’s jaw drop with a thrilling performance that saw her beating competitors despite tripping during take off.

Panipak Wongpattanakit of Thailand also made the kingdom proud with her victory over Spain’s Adriana Cerzo in the women’s 49kg taekwondo final. Called by her nickname, Tennis, (funny enough), the 23-year-old is the country’s first gold medalist in the sport. Big congratulations to everyone!

Bid farewell to this historic Olympics run as the Games wrap up this Sunday, 8 August. The closing ceremonies at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo will be broadcast live at 18:00 (local time) on AIS Play and Channel 8.
