In pictures: A quiet evening in Chinatown on the first day of eased restrictions

The authorities have extended the opening hours of restaurants to 23:00, and here’s what it looked like on the first day at Bangkok's busiest street food paradise.

It’s good news for Bangkok foodies now that City Hall has gradually eased the lockdown-like restrictions it imposed a few weeks ago. Accompanying the latest announcement regarding the reopening of public libraries and outdoor exercise venues, the authorities also declared that dining venues in the capital can now operate until 23:00, but with only 50 percent capacity.

So we are excited to see the food scene come back to life, and Yaowarat—aka Bangkok’s Chinatown—is one of the biggest street food hubs that’s expected to enjoy the return of the hungry crowds.

Last night (June 21), our photographer traversed the area and, unfortunately, encountered heavy rain, hence the lack of jovial hustle and bustle. The long queues and passersby we were anticipating were barely visible. But we think we were still able to capture the soul and charm of Yaowarat. Take a look.
