Vijit Chao Phraya, the extravaganza of light, colour, fireworks and sound, is poised to illuminate Bangkok’s majestic river all over again. This year, the festival extends to 45 days, running from November 1 to December 15. That means the Big Mango will glow for more than a month and a half. The event also coincides with one of Thailand’s most important holidays, Loy Krathong, on November 5. Yes, you’ll get to float your basket under the city lights.

The light show stretches across Bangkok’s most iconic river stops, including Iconsiam, Rama VIII Bridge, Asiatique, Siriraj Pier, Wat Arun and more. It’s also considered a major Bangkok art event. Each night, the river shimmers with spectacular light installations, 3D projections and cultural performances staged at key piers and landmarks. Expect immersive art, live music and themed displays that celebrate Thai heritage while embracing modern technology.

In its fourth year, the festival is expected to pull in more than 1.5 million visitors and pump B500 million into the economy, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand leading the charge with its key partners. Hotels and river cruises are also rolling out special packages, so whether you want to perch on the riverbank or get a front-row deck seat, you’re covered. Shutterbugs, keep your batteries full. There’s a photography and video contest, where your night shots could go viral.

Worried about the crowds and moving boats? Don’t be. A tight-knit crew of Navy officers, marine police, hospitals and city officials will be on hand to keep traffic flowing, viewing areas clear and everyone safe. And getting there is a breeze via the BTS Skytrain and riverboats.

A boost for Thai tourism

Behind the spectacle lies a smart tourism push. ‘Meaningful Travel’ is the buzzword, encouraging visitors to linger longer, support local businesses and connect with Bangkok’s river culture instead of just snapping a few photos and leaving. It’s also Thailand’s way of putting the Chao Phraya on the world stage, right up there with the Seine or the Thames.

Vijit Chao Phraya 2025 is set to be one of Asia’s brightest winter attractions and if Bangkok knows how to do anything, it’s how to throw a show that’s impossible to ignore.
