Thonglor popular diner Soul Food Mahanakorn, together with its spin-off eatery Soul Food 555, waved its last goodbye on June 7 after over ten years of being beloved among Thai and international foodies. Owner Jarrett Wrisley took to the restaurant's Instagram account to announce the heartbreaking news.

"We’re closing Soul Food Mahanakorn, and its’ spinoff, Soul Food 555," Wrisley wrote, "So this is goodbye, for now. We’re pulling the old metal door down, for good. We thank you, deeply and sincerely and from the bottom of our broken hearts, for all the wonderful years we’ve shared together. So many small acts of kindness have happened under this roof that we’ll be eternally grateful for." See the full post below.

This has been another massive frustration for Bangkok's dining scene following big names in the game like Bo.lan and Chu that each decided to close down their business. Similar to these two well-known venues, Soul Food Mahanakorn underwent the same problems posed by the pandemic and the mismanagement of the Thai government.

"Sometimes, life presents challenges that one can’t fix with a phone call," the owner said, "this city’s dining scene ... would be slowly and systematically strangled by unreasonable regulations, and a lack of strategy and financial support from the Thai government."

There are no future plans for Soul Food Mahanakorn or Jarrett Wrisley and his wife Candice Lin. But he stated in the post that the venue now goes on sales for anyone to wish to take over.

Soul Food Mahanakorn first opened in Thonglor back in 2010. It focused on serving Thai comfort food and a wide range of creative cocktails, and it has since been a crowd-pleasing spot in this Bangkok's bougie area.

Soul Food Thai, the outpost in Hong Kong, continues to live on.
