Staging Miss Universe must have done wonders for Thai tourism because it’s been confirmed that the country will once again play host to another major beauty pageant—Miss World, the world’s longest-running international beauty competition, will be held in Thailand this year.

First started in 1951 and still run by its founder, Julia Morley, the beauty pageant is themed around the idea of “Beauty with a Purpose.” Like other competitions involving women parading around in various forms of dress, Miss World has long been praised for its continuous search for beauties who can send out messages of empowerment, as much as being condemned for its out-of-date programs and systems.

In Thailand, many local winners have gone on to become showbiz stars, but Miss World only really got the attention of pageant fans when Miss Thailand World 2018 Nicolene Limsnukan bagged the runner-up position at last year’s Miss World finals in Sanya, China. Final dates and locations for the 69th Miss World finals in Thailand have yet to be announced.
