Thinking of cutting ties with wearing a mask? Well, not so soon. Bangkokians may have to return to wearing a mask outdoors, this time as a protection against PM 2.5, those ultra-fine particulates that can be very damaging to the respiratory system.

PM2.5 pollutants, which are caused by petrol and agricultural burning, as well as construction activities, are always in the air, but the high pressure during the cool season makes them stay mid-air—the level at which we breathe. When inhaled, these particles can go deep into the lungs and cause anything from irritation to lung disease.

These days, PM2.5 in Bangkok measure at around 38 to 70 micrograms per cubic meter, depending on the area. This measurement is way worse than what WHO recommends for healthy clean air (PM2.5 should be less than 15 micrograms per cubic meter in a 24 hour duration.)

Looking at the rising curve of PM2.5, The Ministry of Public Health is encouraging Bangkok residents to always check air quality apps, and stay indoors or wear protective masks outdoors when there’s a warning.
