Every summer, durian splits Bangkok cleanly in two. Devotees treat it like a national event while everyone else avoids enclosed spaces. But for those firmly on team durian, this year’s crop goes well beyond roadside stalls and supermarket trays. Across Bangkok, chefs, bakers and beauty brands are folding the king of fruits into curries, cheesecakes, ice cream and even skincare with surprisingly convincing results .

Here are seven durian creations genuinely worth your time this season.

  • Phrom Phong

Sri Trat Restaurant and Bar has long understood that eastern Thai cooking works best when it leans fully into bold flavours, and its seasonal massaman proves durian belongs far beyond dessert. Here, raw durian replaces the usual potato, slowly braised with chicken, coconut milk and house-made curry paste until everything softens into a rich, creamy stew. The fruit adds subtle sweetness and extra body without overpowering the spice, while tamarind and pungent Trat fish sauce keep things sharp and balanced. Crispy salted fish on the side brings crunch and a salty hit that cuts straight through the richness. One of those dishes that stays in your head long after dinner’s over.

33 Sukhumvit Soi 33. Open daily 11am-10.30pm. Tel: 02 088 0968. More details at sritrat.com

YOLK’s Monthong Durian Custard Egg Tart

Bangkok already queues hard for YOLK’s egg tarts, and durian season is not helping matters . This limited version folds fresh Chanthaburi monthong into a silky custard slow-cooked over low heat until almost impossibly smooth. . The durian flavour lands clearly without tipping into the aggressively funky territory sceptics fear, while a hidden layer of toddy palm caramel adds a salty-sweet note straight out of classic Thai desserts . Wrapped up inside YOLK’s crisp pastry shell, it’s dangerously easy to finish in a couple of bites.

Lip It’s Musang King Durian Lip Balm

Nobody asked for durian lip balm, which somehow makes this even better. Lip It’s limited-edition Tint Me Healthy Lip Balm uses Malaysia’s prized Musang King variety and turns it into something surprisingly wearable. The scent stays soft and sweet rather than full-on durian market chaos, while the glossy formula shifts into a rosy tint depending on your lip’s pH. It’s more ‘your lips but better’ than novelty gimmick. Only 4,000 units were made, so expect durian loyalists to treat it like collector’s merchandise. Currently priced only B99 (from B189).

Available via Karmart Shop, TikTok Shop, Shopee and Lazada. Updates via @lipit.th

Nie & Ivan’s Monthong Durian Cheesecake

Known to regulars simply as ‘Nene’s cake’, this collaboration between influencer Nene Pornnapat and Ivan Factory has become one of Bangkok’s most reliable durian desserts. The cheesecake keeps things balanced – smooth, fragrant and creamy without becoming heavy-handed. Real durian flesh runs through the filling, so every bite lands somewhere between fresh monthong and rich cream cheese, while the crumbly sweet-salty base stops the whole thing drifting into sugar overload. . Intended for sharing, realistically finished alone.

Prices start from B550-650.

Available at Siam Paragon, EmQuartier and Emporium, Central Pattaya Beach and The Mall branches at Ngamwongwan, Thapra and Bangkae.More details via @nie_and_ivan

  • Siam

This might be the most photographed durian dessert right now, largely because it genuinely looks like somebody left a real monthong on the counter. IceDEA sculpts the shell from durian and green tea ice cream complete with convincing spikes and deep yellow colouring, while the inside hides pure durian ice cream made with 100 percent real fruit and no added flavouring. The green tea layer keeps the sweetness from becoming overwhelming and crushed almonds running through the centre add proper texture. Silly in concept, surprisingly serious in execution. Priced B239 a piece.

Duri Buri Durian Cafe

For people who refuse to accept that durian season should only last a few months, Duri Buri exists year-round inside Siam Square One in unapologetically bright yellow form. The menu goes all in: bua loy dumplings, durian sticky rice, oversized bingsu piled with monthong flesh, golden threads and lotus seeds plus scoops of durian ice cream if you want something colder and simpler . It leans fully into the obsession and honestly, Bangkok’s probably better for it.

Durrianar’s Durian Blossom Skincare

With the tagline ‘King of Fruit to Queen of Beauty’, this might be the strangest durian creation on the list – and easily one of the most intriguing.  Durrianar by SQ skips the fruit entirely and focuses instead on the durian flower, harvested from orchards in Rayong as part of a zero-waste approach that transforms agricultural leftovers into skincare. The key ingredient is a cold-pressed blossom extract backed by research into its antioxidant properties and potential to improve skin firmness and radiance.
