Kandal Village Tour

Nestled between the Old Market area and the Old French Quarter is Kandal Village, a small site packed with shophouses and street stalls. Walk around and shop for Cambodia’s famed kampot (black pepper) and spices, or souvenir items. The place is quite peaceful and looks totally different from the rest of Siem Reap.

The restaurant, operated by EGBOK, a Cambodia-based, nonprofit hospitality training school, serves Khmer and western dishes that are cooked and served by the students themselves. Think of your meal as one way to contribute to the educational development of underprivileged youth in Cambodia.

Phare

Phare is Cambodia’s version of Cirque du Soleil. The circus shines a light on the country’s history and beliefs through thrilling performances, jaw-dropping acrobatics and lively music. It’s actually a social enterprise that supports free education and professional training programs of Phare Ponleu Selpak, a school for visual and circus arts. Check out their website for schedules and to buy tickets.

Pub Street

Think Khao San, but bigger and much cleaner. The drinks are cheaper, too. There are no street vendors, but you will see food merchants selling grilled insects, scorpions and snakes to curious palates and brave souls. One spot to visit where you won’t have to put anything exotic in your mouth is Miss Wong Cocktail Bar. Here, the atmosphere is friendly and the cocktails are good.

Anantara Angkor Resort & Spa

Located just 15 minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from Angkor Wat in another direction, this boutique resort is a popular stay for luxurious holidays in Siem Reap. The resort is very cognizant of Cambodia’s rich design heritage, hence the wooden floors, heavy teak wood furniture, and Khmer-style sculptures carved from sandstone. A salt pool sits in the middle of the resort, surrounded by greenery, a courtyard where you can enjoy an authentic Cambodian dining experience, and a spa offering traditional Khmer massages. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Don’t hesitate to ask them about the complimentary tuk-tuk service to the center of town.
