The best restaurants for group lunches and dinners in Cascais

Estrada do Guincho has always been synonymous with fish and seafood, but Gabbro has shaken things up with a 100 per cent Italian menu. Its relaxed, traditional kitchen turns out Neapolitan pizzas with raised crusts and thin, crisp centres, classic pasta dishes such as carbonara and cacio e pepe, and desserts including cannoli, tiramisù and panna cotta. The atmosphere is also unlike anything else in the area: instead of a restrained dining room, the décor mixes colourful floral and striped patterns, displays crockery and keepsakes in a huge cabinet and includes a small market. Fresh produce is laid out across a stone counter alongside baskets of fruit, potatoes and pumpkins, vintage scales, aromatic herbs and hanging strings of garlic. At weekends, a DJ keeps the party going late into the night.

Whether it’s a work lunch or a family meal, there’s room for everyone at Barro. Led by chef Daniel Estriga – the man behind Conceito – the restaurant aims to serve healthy meals for the whole family without forgetting that food should taste good. But there’s more to it than that. Next door is Heirloom Market, an organic food shop owned by the same team that supplies ingredients to the restaurant. Conveniently located between international schools and business districts, Barro focuses on seasonal produce, avoids refined foods and pays particular attention to nutrition. The menu includes dishes such as black pork loin with fermented peach, as well as fish and meat grilled to order and house-made sourdough bread.

With a terrace on the pedestrianised street and an upstairs floor made for larger groups, this Mexican restaurant stands out for its party atmosphere and sharing-friendly menu. Over ice-cold margaritas, the meal calls for big platters in the middle of the table, from nachos with guacamole to DIY tacos – ideal for feasting while laughing at friends with sauce all over their sleeves. One of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in the Lisbon region, Estoril Mandarim serves the true flavours of Kuong Tong. Its extensive lunch menu includes the legendary dim sum, while the sheer number of dinner options is difficult to list, so we’ll make things easier: Peking duck is one of the specialities, alongside shark fin soup. With three private dining rooms for groups – seating eight, 14 and an impressive 42 guests – it’s well worth considering for an authentic and memorable Chinese meal.

If you’re looking for a restaurant that celebrates the art of petiscos, voilà. A steady stream of waiters moves between the dining rooms and terrace carrying plates of potato skins, Padrón peppers, eggs with asparagus, alheira croquettes, pregos and steaks. You won’t find flavours much more Portuguese – or prices much friendlier.

Visit Pow Chicks without doing your homework and you might assume it’s a long-standing American franchise. It isn’t: the brand is Portuguese and its story is very recent. Set beside the Casino gardens in Estoril, its retro look recalls American diners from the 1950s and ’60s. The menu centres on five chicken burgers, all made with seasoned, boneless thigh meat that is hand-breaded and fried to order. Groups of teenagers and young adults gather for lunch and dinner, either inside or on the spacious terrace.

7Roots was born from Catarina Branco and her husband Luís Segura’s desire to create a welcoming place in Carcavelos, inspired by the Portuguese tradition of sharing petiscos and lingering around the table. Set in Praça do Junqueiro, a place with strong personal ties for Catarina, the restaurant focuses on Portuguese favourites such as alheira croquettes, ovos rotos, pica-pau and bacalhau à 7Roots. Main courses include Portuguese-style fillet steak, pork cheeks, confit octopus and vegan options. A bar serving classic and signature cocktails, together with a beautiful terrace, adds to the warm, laid-back atmosphere the founders hope will make customers feel at home.
