Chicago is a hotspot for summer travelers, but it turns out the Windy City is also a hotspot for some very unwanted guests. Orkin just dropped its 2026 Bed Bug Cities List, and for the sixth consecutive year, Chicago has taken home the crown that nobody wanted: America’s Worst City for Bed Bugs.

While cities like Los Angeles, Detroit and Cleveland are high on the list, Chicago remains the undisputed heavyweight champion of itchy nights. The city isn't just a world-class hub for architecture and sports; it is officially the country's premier luxury resort for its most frustrating nocturnal hitchhikers.

Why does Chicago keep winning this terrible prize? Experts point to the city's dense population and high-turnover environments. With massive summer music festivals, packed conventions and booming tourism, the city creates a perfect storm that's perfect for the pests. They love jumping from hotel mattresses to residential apartments, using unsuspecting travelers as their transport.

Even as sunny vacation spots like Tampa and Myrtle Beach join the 2026 list, they’re still just playing catch-up to Chicago's dominant infestation rate.

If you're traveling to Chicago, however, entomologists say you don't need to panic, but you do need to use the S.L.E.E.P. method before you unpack:

  • Search the room for apple-seed-sized bugs or tiny, ink-like spots.
  • Lift the sheets, curtains, and cushions. Yes, actually look under there.
  • Elevate your suitcases on luggage racks. The floor is lava; the bed is a launchpad.
  • Examine your bags when repacking and when you cross your own threshold.
  • Place all your clothes straight into the dryer on high heat for 30 to 45 minutes the second you get home.

Chicago is an amazing place to visit, and live. Just remember to stay vigilant so you don't end up with a horde of six-legged friends.
