Chicago is home to many amazing steakhouses, and one of them has just earned national acclaim.
The New York Times revealed its 2024 list of America’s best restaurants, and Asador Bastian made the cut. The River North chophouse with Basque influences was the only Chicago spot to be recognized.
“It is no small thing to call this chophouse’s steak the best in Chicago. But it’s hard to argue with the evidence, be it a bone-in rib-eye of Galician beef, rimmed with yellow fat, or a cut of dry-aged Holstein that all but instructs you to order an old Rioja Gran Reserva,” writes New York Times contributor Brett Anderson.
It’s been a year of accolades for Asador Bastian—this past May, it was ranked No. 14 on the 2024 World’s Best Steak Restaurants list. The blend of Spanish Asador-style cooking with the classic Chicago steakhouse experience has been a big hit with critics and diners alike. The menu offers notable dishes like churros topped with caviar; octopus a la plancha; and bone marrow potato puree.
Of course, the stars of the show are the coal-roasted Txuleton steaks—large rib steaks produced from retired dairy cows in the Basque Country. There are three to five types of cattle breeds to choose from, each with its own distinct flavor.
