'Why have less when you could have more?' is the attitude at Hugo’s Bar, a new venue bringing quirky interiors to the shores of Zagreb’s Lake Jarun

Jarun is Zagreb’s green escape, hosting all manner of watersports and outdoor activities as well as June’s INmusic festival. At 31 years old, this year the lake is a staple of the city’s nightlife scene too. Zagreb’s clubbing crowd regularly make the pilgrimage here where the air is slightly fresher, and clubs stay open longer.

Hugo’s Bar stands out from the crowd, the interior alone distinguishes it from some of the more generic-looking lakeside bars. Horses rush across the walls, bringing to mind the speed and motion of Futurist paintings. The bar's centerpiece is a tall, vibrantly pink tree missing its leaves. Various mismatched elements come together here and yet somehow it all works. The playful experimentation of its designers, borrowing styles from here and there like children in a sweetshop, has resulted in something odd and completely one of a kind.

While it's worth a visit for the interior design alone, the drinks menu is a gin lover’s dream. Very much on trend when it comes to the original Dutch Courage, they even offer a ‘make your own gin’ experience.
