Time Out says

Director Lau Kek Huat's stirring film 'Absent Without Leave' explores a period of our country's history that's not often discussed publicly. A portrait hangs in the narrator's home, the identity of the subject a taboo in his family. When the narrator discovers that the portrait is of his grandfather, who was a member of the Malayan Communist Party, he starts to learn facts about his country's history through the mixed generational memories of this man. After the screening, there will be a discussion on the ambivalance of memories in our history of the Malayan Emergency.
