‘Do you like it? Do you like it? Come on, you must like it. It’s great!’ That’s Tom, a friend of ours who bought a house in West Norwood three years ago, when the area was, he admits, ‘a bit shit’. Since then a monthly market has opened – the West Norwood Feast – and more recently, a swish new food pub.

‘The more you like this place, the more the value of my house goes up.’ Tom’s got a point – nothing spearheads gentrification like a destination eatery.

Our pulled pork burger served on a blue-rimmed plate was merely good, though could have been great had the un-toasted bun not soaked up all the moisture from the sweet, tender meat and turned the last few mouthfuls into a sort of porky paste. The small sharing plates – bruschetta, Buffalo chicken wings, flatbreads with dips – were decent enough, if lacking a little imagination.

The beer selection isn’t bad, with four regularly changing ales, though these are £4 a pop. Craft devotees will have to make do with bottles. Hackney-based brewers Pressure Drop and Five Points are both represented, while the Camden Town Brewery offering goes beyond the ubiquitous Hells Lager and Pale Ale.

Out back there’s a sizeable patio with picnic benches and a barbecue enclosure packing some serious hardware (including a smoker), so expect the large indoor space – all bare brick and artfully knackered sofas – to be deserted on warmer evenings.

There are very few new ideas being put to work at the Great North Wood, and those visiting from areas of the city already overrun with pop-ups and haircuts may struggle to find anything special about its by-the-book remit. But if, like our mate Tom, you moved to this area with no good pubs because it was a relatively affordable place to live, you’ve now got a great new local.

Amazing food, service, venue and atmosphere. Wines are great, fabulous Prossecco! The pub is amazing the best experience of a pub you could ever ask for. Good drinks and fine dining all in one. They also have a great garden. It is a fabulous addition to the area and I'm glad to call it my local.

Good food, great choice of beers, friendly staff and a decent beer garden too

Great gem of a pub. Good good, friendly staff, suitable for dogs and kids, feels familiar and welcoming

Excellent food on offer, great local beer selectuon, relaxed atmosphere and a cute garden out back

Fun, well-supported Monday night pub quiz. Great location, can fall out of train straight into the GNW. Food is always delicious, happier now it's being served on proper crockery rather than army surplus tin plates. Wonderful friendly bar staff, great selection of local beer and inspired cocktails. Dog, baby and local oddball friendly.

The staff, atmosphere and food are the best! We go there at least once a week and couldn't be happier that it's our local pub.

Best quality pub round here, good crowd, great service, classy food and a wifi that works well (self employed) ;-)

Overpriced and pretentious. The trick of having no bottles of house wine-only overpriced and small carafes-is really annoying! You'd be better off taking a short bus journey up to Crystal Palace!

I can't believe I let superstition deny the delightful smells that had been tugging at my senses; there really is a worthy establishment on my once-bereft doorstep.

Really great pub. Laid back atmosphere and fit out but with a really impressive menu and beer selection. Perfect combination for a local pub. Everything I've had there has been incredibly tasty which is really what you want. A great addition to West Norwood.

What can I say, a massive improvement to what came before it. I've been to The Great North Wood a few times now with friends and we've always enjoyed the atmosphere. Good range of beers and tasty food. Would definitely recommend if in the area.

Massive improvement on what was hear before. Great food, great selection of beers/ales/ciders and a reasonably priced wine list. Very good indeed!
