Athletics: London Anniversary Games

Fri Jul 26, 7.30-8.30pm & 8.30-10pm, BBC2 & BBC1

The recent doping scandals surrounding Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell will certainly cast a pall over what, after all, was meant to be a celebratory event today – but also a competitive one, with this meeting at London’s Olympic stadium also serving as the eleventh round of the lucrative Diamond League. Almost thirty Olympic medallists will be in action over the weekend, although Usain Bolt may find the field a little thinned out for his stroll to the 100m line tonight (the 200m and 400m will also be run).

A sell-out crowd should ensure a tremendous atmosphere, while Gabby Logan will presumably try her best to keep a lid on the hyperbole in the studio. The coverage continues tomorrow from 1.30pm on BBC1, with Jessica Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford hoping to rekindle that ‘Super Saturday’ magic. No pressure, then.

What a spectacular venue! I was lucky enough to be in the stadium during the 2012 Olympics and now for the Anniversary Games. Almost as exciting as the Olympics, especially when crowd favourites Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford were competing! Great atmosphere even for the less popular events just as shot put and pole vault. Awesome stadium, seems like every seat has a good view. Well done London!
