Dunking is an art. First, pick the perfect position to hold your sweet treat, while figuring out the optimal timeframe in which to plunge, so half doesn’t slosh to the bottom. Before all that, of course, choosing the right biscuit is absolutely vital. Utterly useless pieces of information these may be, but anyone obsessed with tea and biscuits will find Nigel Slater’s ode to the confection charmingly nostalgic.

As well as revealing the science behind the time half a Rich Tea takes to flop off, Slater delves into the history of the baked good, when they served merely as a means to feed sailors over long periods at sea. The professional foodie also meets with experts and reveals a few personal stories behind his favourite biccies. Slater’s enthusiasm for something so seemingly inconsequential can get exasperating, but then perhaps it’s worth taking a bit of time to appreciate certain slices of life we take for granted.
