Walking, insists seasoned globetrotter Simon Reeve, is the best and only way to engage with a country and its landscape. Although no pilgrim himself, his is an interesting exploration of not only both traditional and contemporary religious reasoning behind such journeys.

Self-discovery, personal challenge and even, in one couple's case, an extreme method of ‘get to know you’: all is revealed as he talks to modern pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela and Rome. The routes are beautiful and some ancient storytelling and enthusiastic characters provide some quirk, while Reeve maintains his studious, curious objectivity. A steady, satisfying balance of the historic and the human, the strange and the traditional. If walking’s your bag, you’re bound to enjoy it. If however you prefer to take the bus, you may be advised to look elsewhere.
