Akbar’s retro-style lounge has become Silver Lake’s ultimate gay alternative hipster hangout. The crowd is a mix of all ages, drawing from LA’s pockets of cool like Echo Park and Downtown. Drinks are strong, dancing is abundant and most nights come with a theme—like Mario Diaz’s big Saturday dance party Full Frontal Disco, where classic and soon-to-be classic dance hits commingle with boys in bowlers, wearing fishnets and stillettos in the center of the action.

Its my favorite bar, the staff, the shows, the dancing, the variety of queers here make my heart happy. It feels like home.
20 years later and EVERYONE is still welcomed here, feels comfortable here, and they've made Silver Lake very proud! Really good people run/own this bar, too! VIVA AKBAR!
Akbar is a magic place where LGBTQ artists and activists of all ages can hang out and get creative. I have never known another venue as creative and community sustaining as Akbar anywhere in the City of Angels.
This bar has never lost it's neighborhood feel after all of these years. There are so many fun themed nights. At a time of the hipters moving into Silverlake and ruining everything, Akbar has never lost its spirit and it's wonderfully gay vibe. AND, I met my wife there on the dance floor! Akbar forever!
Pretention free. Community oriented (gay and straight). Stiff drinks for extremely reasonable prices. And most importantly, whether dancing or just socializing, it's FUN AS HELL!
