The Woods

Both LA’s great sushi and bars can be found in strip malls, and The Woods is no exception. Next door to exotic ice creamery Mashti Malone’s, the cozy bar takes a cue looks like a modern hunting lodge with its antler chandeliers, tree stump tables, and geometric, wood block walls. A long snaking bar spans much of the venue’s length, behind which bartenders pour cheapie well drinks, wine and domestic brews for $5 and under. Though the place is more locals hangout than schmancy cocktail bar, it’s nonetheless owned by Vintage Bar Group (El Bar, No Bar), so a somewhat cocktail list is in place from Old Fashioned to SEXX in The Woods.

Strong drinks, forest noir atmosphere, it's easy to lose track of time here as you sip on something simple and stiff or something boozy and decadent (hello S'mores Martini).  Dimly lit, half dive bar, half themed fantasy (with just a tinge of Twin Peaks), come here for a date or use it as a neighboring watering hole.  It's easy to miss unless you're looking for it (aren't all good things in LA?) as it's in a unremarkable strip mall in a less traveled corridor in Hollywood.  Get here early and it'll be easy to find street parking.

I really wanted to like this place and have been wanting to go forever. Located in a strip mall of La Brea the vibe was a bit off. It was extremely dark and a bit unwelcoming. I ordered their house favorite (Mint Julep) that was SO strong I couldn't even manage a sip. When I asked for another drink (The Southside - one that my friends had and I tried) she made it even stronger than my first drink. I ended up leaving shortly after and didn't finish it. Hopefully it's better next time!
