5 things I learned from 'Pretty Woman'

“Pretty Woman” has been my favorite movie since I was a kid... I just had to fast-forward past the piano scene (mother’s orders!). As we celebrate the classic movie’s 25th anniversary, here are a few things I learned about dating from Vivian and Edward.

1. Be unapologetically yourself. Vivian in the bathtub singing Prince. Need I say more?

2. Give people a chance. If you don’t, it could be a "Big Mistake. Huge." Write someone off too soon because of something shallow like appearance, and you could be missing out on a great thing.

3. Don’t sell yourself short. Remember when Vivian and Edward negotiate how much it will cost to have her stay for the week? And later he says he would have paid $4,000 and she would have paid $2,000? Even if you’re not negotiating your rate for a week (and I hope you aren’t), it’s a good lesson in knowing what you’re worth and that you’re valued. If your date doesn’t realize that, find someone who does.

4. No kissing. Usually kissing seems like the most logical first step to seeing if there’s a spark. But according to Vivian, it’s too intimate. Waiting to kiss (um, even if you’re doing some other things along the way) could spare you some heartache.

5. A compliment can go a long way. “You’re late. You’re stunning. You’re forgiven.”
