Irvine is the safest city in America with a population of more than 200,000 residents, according to a Crime in America survey by Law Street, a law and policy website.

The list was created using 2014 surveys from the FBI that provide statistics on violent crimes including murders, aggravated assaults, robberies and rapes. This is the third consecutive year that the Orange County locale topped the list.

Several other California cities were also included on the safe list: the Bay Area's Fremont was ranked third, Santa Clarita placed fifth and Chula Vista rounded out the list at No. 10.

The site also tallied the most dangerous cities with a population of more than 200,000 (topped by Detroit), which also had a few California contenders. Oakland ranked third, while Stockton came in ninth.

While the site didn’t publish a list of safest small cities, they included some of the little guys in a most dangerous list. The ranking of most dangerous cities under 200,000 residents did not include any cities in California, but in case you’re wondering, Little Rock, Ark., which came in at No. 1. Also, it's worth pointing out that three cities on the list are named Springfield.
