Is Daft Punk playing Coachella? The internet thinks so.

Daft Punk is playing Coachella 2017—maybe. The evidence? A series of latitude and longitude coordinates hidden in a barebones web page. The authenticity of said site? Suspect at best.

But let's step back first: A Reddit thread posted on September 27 surfaced a stark website, alive2017.com. Fans of the French electronic duo will recognize that naming scheme from its iconic Alive 2006/2007 tour—the one that hatched the illuminated pyramid—and accompanying live album.

The site itself features nothing more than the word "Alive" and a countdown timer that points to October 27, 2016. Poke around in the source code, though, and you'll find a list of latitude and longitude coordinates that Genius has mapped to cities:

Paris (48 51 24 2 21 03)
Los Angeles (34 03 118 15)
London (51 30 26 N 0 7 39)
New York (40 7128 74 0059)
Tokyo (35 6895 139 6917)
Sao Paulo (23 5505 46 6333)
Ibiza (39 0200 1 4821)
Indio (33 7206 116 2156)

Indio, of course, is home to the Empire Polo Club, which hosts Coachella each spring. So Daft Punk at Coachella 2017 confirmed? Well, the site just so happened to be created on the same day it hit Reddit and shows no immediate evidence to connect it to the official Daft Punk website. That the band would play both Los Angeles and Coachella also seems pretty unlikely—any L.A. area shows ahead of or after Coachella would be announced well after tickets for the fest have already gone on sale. Similarly, we can't imagine Goldenvoice allowing Coachella announcements to slip through the cracks this early. And finally, it all just seems too convenient: The Daft Punk references littered throughout the source code scream wishful thinking from a fan.

Who knows, maybe Daft Punk will play Coachella, but we don't think this website is by any means a solid piece of evidence to confirm that. On the other hand, we're putting our money on the Shins being slotted into this year's lineup.
