Runyon Canyon Park to get basketball court, unless neighbors have anything to say about it

We've already reported on the current closure of Angelenos' beloved Runyon Canyon, but now we're getting some more information regarding said closure. Aside from some fresh new pipes courtesy of DWP, the popular hiking spot might just be getting a new basketball court as well.

According to an email released by the Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council today, the non-profit organization Friends of Runyon Canyon, along with former council member Tom LaBonge, have finalized a deal for the new court, which will be constructed while the area is closed for DWP's repairs. According to the email, the court is being paid for by Pink Dolphin Clothing, and a permanent ad will be painted on the court's surface to remind you of that fact every time you pass by. While an exact location isn't specified, it's assumed the basketball court will take up the former tennis court space.

Not so surprisingly, neighbors are furious. We get it, the parking sitch is already terrible and one more Runyon attraction (aside from the free yoga and the fact that the park is already one of the best hikes in LA), is liable to be the straw that breaks this camel's back. But to top that off, the neighborhood council also says there were no environmental impact studies or sound testing done before the plans were approved. Does this irk you as well? If so, HHWNC is asking you to call or email the office of councilman David Ryu (213-473-7004 or david.ryu@lacity.org). There's also a meeting going down tonight at the Durant Public Library at 6pm, if you're really riled up.

If you're not against it, we'll see ya on the court soon!
