Silent Book Club is a book (and booze) club without the hassles

Book clubs are awesome for combining a love of literature with a love of talking about literature—and possibly indulging the chattiest folks in the group who are always sure they have so much insight to share with everyone. Reading by yourself at home is cool, too, of course, but lacks any social element whatsoever. Silent Book Club is hitting the scene to try to establish a happy medium.

Touring around to various cities, Silent Book Club events set a time and location (most often a bar) and invite members to gather, with the book of their choice in hand. From there, it’s up to you how you pass the time. Read in complete silence while just sitting near other members if you want or launch into a conversation with a new friend about what you’ve each been reading lately. Make it a monthly thing or just drop in when you can. Everyone—and every book—are welcomed.

For their first LA foray, the club is posting up at Library Bar in Downtown for a Monday happy hour. According to their Facebook event, only 12 book-lovers have committed to attend so far, so there should be space for you to fit in (no matter how massive of a tome you’ve got in tow) at this low-key affair.

If you’re in need of a new book to take along to Silent Book Club, take a look at our picks for the city’s best bookshops and find your new favorite.

Silent Book Club meets from 6 to 8pm on August 29 at Library Bar, 630 W 6th St, Los Angeles. Attending the meeting is free with RSVP encouraged.
