Soul Cleansing: LA by Solange Knowles might be the most woke Sunday Funday ever

With everything going on in the world as of late, we all need a time to center ourselves and reflect—including Solange Knowles. Next month, her Saint Heron project presents Soul Cleansing: LA, an afternoon event featuring meditation, fellowship and music performances by Taylor McFerrin and Kadhja Bonet with a spiritual theme.

Saint Heron began as a collaborative compilation album from Solange's Sony-backed record label, Saint, for which she curated work by some of the most innovative and experimental voices working in the R&B genre—think favorites like Sampha and Kelela, along with the curator herself, of course—but the Saint Heron name now appears on a web publication and event series as well, all focused on the celebration of diversity in contemporary culture, in music and beyond.

The artists taking the stage for the Soul Cleansing event are impressive examples of that ethos. Taylor McFerrin (yes, he’s the son of that McFerrin) is a self-taught producer with a flair for jazz and neo-soul stylings that has won him the admiration of a roster of collaborators including Thundercat, Hiatus Kaiyote and Robert Glasper. Kadhja Bonet trained as a classical string instrumentalist and incorporates her violin, viola and guitar work into her sound; but takes it in a fully modern direction, more informed by psychedelic soul and never settling into one genre.

While you can certainly find time each day for a moment of personal balance, nothing beats a gathering of community to share positive energy, beauty and music together. If spending a Sunday afternoon with all that sounds alluring, you’ll need to pick up a ticket in advance. The location of this intimate event will only be revealed after a purchase is made.

Soul Cleansing: LA by Saint Heron takes place on August 21 from 3pm to 8pm at a private location in Los Angeles. Tickets are $17.00 and are on sale now through August 15.
