This Thursday, the Depart Foundation will host Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault II, Jane Fonda, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and art collector and curator Bruce Kapson for the first public conversation in Los Angeles about the Dakota Access Pipeline. The talk will address how the #NoDAPL situation taking place along the Missouri River in North Dakota is of historical, ecological and environmental consequence not only to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and Native Americans, but to all Americans.

The moderated conversation will take place against the backdrop of the Depart Foundation’s exhibition "Rediscovering Genius: The Works of Edward S. Curtis," curated by Bruce Kapson. This is the first show of the Masterwork Copper Photogravure Printing Plates of Curtis’s The North American Indian. These 40 vintage portraits were taken by Curtis more than 100 years ago, and are a small part of his larger project, The North American Indian, comprised of more than 40,000 photographic images depicting Native American life before it disappeared. According to the Library of Congress, Curtis' work is now considered one of the most significant records of Native American culture.

The conversation with Archambault II will be streamed live via Facebook at 2:45pm on Thursday, December 15. Rediscovering Genius will be on Display at the Depart Foundation through January 7, 2017.
