The seven worst ways to break up with someone in LA

Breakups are complicated, unsettling and often result in a whole lot of tears and mixed emotions. If you’re the one getting broken up with, you may feel like you have completely lost control of everything. At the very least, you would hope that the dreaded meeting with your soon-to-be-former significant other would be at a spot that’s private and not somewhere that's ripe for a terrible memory. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Here are the seven worst ways to break up with someone in LA.

1. At the top of Griffith Park

On a good day, it’ll take you anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to drive up the mountain, get a parking spot and walk out to the Observatory. On a bad day, you could be stuck in your car a lot longer, so why put the other person through all of that? Breaking up with someone at Griffith Park would be the cherry on top of a stressful journey up the mountain, not to mention it’s going to be a long, awkward car ride back down.

2. In the Rain Room at LACMA

The Rain Room’s purpose is to give visitors the opportunity of sensory reflection. Breaking up with your boyfriend or girlfriend here enhances the traumatic experience of being broken up with by being surrounded by pouring rain. Plus it's a timed-entry exhibit, meaning while you thought you were counting down the moments to experience this cool exhibit, you were really just counting down to your singledom—you also get a limited time inside the exhibit, so you probably won't get enough of an explanation for any kind of closure.

3. At Coachella

It takes at least two hours to get down to Indio from Los Angeles. After all is said and done, the weekend will cost you about $1,000 for the ticket, food and a place to stay—meaning you spent a lot of time and money planning an epic weekend of fun, not heartbreak. By the end of Coachella, your wallet is empty and your energy is depleted as it is—having a broken heart on top of all that sounds truly terrible. Though, there are plenty of single people around if you're looking to get back in the saddle.

4. At Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Hundreds of Hollywood’s greatest stars are buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. While it’s a fascinating historic site to visit, just knowing this cemetery is the final resting place to many influential Hollywood icons is a bit eerie. Breaking up here would really emphasize the “death” of the relationship.

5. At the Korean Bell of Friendship

The massive Korean Bell of Friendship in San Pedro was built to honor veterans of the Korean War. Just hearing the name of this monument could serve as a prelude to the conversation turning a romantic relationship into a platonic one. The person ending the relationship may think breaking up at a place that represents growth and positivity will show how much he or she still values the relationship they have with the other person, but the person being broken up with may think the Korean Bell of Friendship is serving as a dramatic metaphor for being “just friends.”

6. At the Basement: A Live Escape Room Experience

This interactive mystery attraction is in a basement in Sylmar, and gives players 45 minutes to work with their team to figure out how to escape from a cannibalistic killer "holding them hostage." A major make-or-break of the challenge is communicating with everyone else who is also trapped. In your case, if your significant other chooses to break up with you here, escaping from the killer will be the least of your worries. Can you imagine being locked in a room with the person who just broke your heart? Talk about torture.

7. Driving at night on Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive is known for its sharp, windy turns with a gorgeous view of Los Angeles, as well as its frightening view of the cliffside. Another creepy aspect of the famed road is there’s really no light once the sun goes down except for headlights. If you’re the one driving who is getting broken up with by the person in the passenger seat, you could be completely taken off guard. This would be one of the worst things that could happen considering you need top-notch concentration while cruising the corners. If you’re in the passenger seat, your nausea and anxiousness from the drive alone, combined with the unsettling feeling in your stomach from getting broken up with most likely will end up in a teary-eyed carsick mess.
