What Would You Brew: 6 beers inspired by iconic LA dishes

Angel City Brewery’s third consecutive What Would You Brew? competition is back with plans to concoct something strange and (hopefully) tasty. Here's how the contest works: Angelenos can submit ideas for strange new brews, hoping to kickstart the next big trend in craft beer. The brewery selects a victor who will get to brew their winning idea with the Angel City staff. They also get a nifty prize package that includes a custom kegerator, a case of pint glasses, a tap handle, a tin tacker sign and a feature during LA Beer Week 2016.

The competition's first winner back in 2013 was a Mexican cola beer, featuring roasted malts, citrus peel and tamarind. In 2014, Desert Dreams won the contest, and included orange peel, prickly pear cactus, sage and figs.

Last year we threw together a list of what we wish the beer world could offer us, and sadly none of our ideas were picked. But being the resilient crew that we are, we’ve licked our wounds and come up with a few ideas for beers inspired by some of LA’s most iconic dishes. Fingers crossed, this year's our year.

Sqirl's brioche toast: toasted hops with notes of strawberry, fig and thyme

Eggslut's egg, bacon and cheese sandwich: sour beer with hints of bacon, topped with an egg white foam

The Apple Pan's Hickory burger: hickory apple cider

Guelaguetza's mole: rich, dark chocolate mole porter

Ricky's Fish Tacos horchata: brewed in the style of Ricky's delicious horchata

Dune's organic dates: date and rosewater double IPA

If you're feeling inspired, nominate your own ideas. Entries for the What Would You Brew contest are accepted through Sept. 30.
