Come to Olvera Street for an all-day celebration centered around the re-unveiling of famed Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros' mural América Tropical, 80 years after it was originally painted. The family-friendly day will include art exhibitions, folkloric dances, street theater and mariachi music, and workshops on mural painting and creating your own Chinese-style lantern inspired by the murals of the city. At 4:30pm, watch a performance of América Tropical, the opera by David Conte, which is based on Los Angeles' history: from Siqueiros painting his mural to the Rodney King beating. The evening continues with the UCLA Philharmonic's performance of América Tropical by Steven Loza at 6:30pm, which is followed by Latin music that will play into the evening. The free festival is sponsored by the Getty Conservation Institute, which has helped organize the entire day's event schedule.
