This epic melodrama follows husband Fugui and wife Jiazhen as they struggle to raise their family throughout poverty and the Civil War during Mao's regime. The panoramic view of Chinese politics and life is tempered with a moving personal narrative, touches of black comedy and a pervasive optimistic spirit. See Director Zhang Yimou's Mandarin-language film for free at Monterey Park's East Los Angeles College (1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez) as part of LACMA's off-site Art + Film Lab. The screening will take place in the school's Performing and Fine Arts Center's recital hall.
