Malibu Surf Shack
Courtesy Malibu Surf Shack. Surf's up.

This beachside shack offers surfing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding rentals and lessons. Park in the lot next door for $10 and leave your keys with the store, which also sells wet suits, swimsuits and last-minute necessities like sunglasses and sunscreen. While on the water, you'll need to leave any extra clothing and shoes on the beach unsupervised, so keep anything valuable in your car. Insider tip: with no hose or showers nearby to rinse off post-ocean, bring a gallon jug of water and leave it in your car exposed to sunlight to heat up for a refreshing rinse before you dry off.

This place is so fun—the owners, a married couple, are friendly and laid back, and always remember (and reward) repeat customers. It's such an easy place to rent gear—you can usually find parking nearby (though sometimes you may have to pay for it), and the beach is just across the street. They have a big trailer filled with boards and will pull out anything you want, help you get it down to the beach and launch you out, or you can spring for a guided tour or lesson with one of their young, adorable surfer-dude instructors.
