I’m sitting overlooking The Hoxton, Downtown LA’s compact rooftop pool, and a couple also perched up there, covered in striking tattoos and vibrant, colorful style, perfectly embody this brand’s effortless sense of cool. The Hoxton has east London origins but has since spread to an 18-strong collection of properties all over the world. Here’s why the Downtown L.A. location is worth visiting.
Unlike most cities, downtown Los Angeles is no longer the heart and soul of this infinitely sprawling metropolis, having long ago ceded its epicenter status to enclaves like Mid-City, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. Nevertheless, DTLA is home to a fabulous collection of museums and cultural institutions, stunning architectural landmarks (including the 1925 Beaux-Arts high rise that houses the Hoxton) and seriously formidable food and nightlife. Here you’ll never be stuck on a freeway and can instead explore the city via Metro, aboard the world’s shortest funicular (Angel Flight) and in the least LA way of all—by walking. If DTLA is your desired intro to the City of Angels, you’ll be well positioned with a Hoxton stay.
Unfussy, elegant and modern are all words that come to mind. In “Biggy” rooms, king beds are perfectly comfortable and contain rattan headboards that fan out like the feathers on a peacock. A sitting area includes pink velvet accent chairs surrounding a small, marble-top bistro table. Wood floors are chevron—a pattern also spotted in the lobby and in elevators. Downtown LA is the world’s capital of noir and the Hoxton leans into the genre with retro touches like black rotary phones whose cords coil around them like snakes, freestanding metal garment racks and frosted glass bathroom doors—just like in a private dick’s office. Request an upper floor, north-facing room for stunning views with mountain vistas.
Head to plant-filled rooftop restaurant Inanna Bar for Mediterranean-inspired bites and refreshing, breezy air. While there are sit-down tables, dishes like the sumac wings and wood-grilled burger can even be enjoyed poolside.
Moonlark’s Dinette, meanwhile, offers slick booths styled with marbled tabletops and tufted banquettes. The counter is just as fun thanks to backless swivel barstools with kitchen views, and the menu includes eggs pretty much whichever way you’d like, and plenty of delicious sandwich options.
Thanks to the swimming pool, the rooftop is the Hoxton’s buzziest hive. But don’t count out its long and leggy ground-floor lobby which offers an art-filled café (where a $9.18 Americano is expensive even by hotel standards), a compact bar boasting sage green barstools, gleaming brass fixtures, and a winsome backsplash, and a sitting area containing design elements you’ll want to steal for your own home like patterned wingback chairs, coffee tables with travertine finishes, and single bulb pendant lights that illuminate the area in a soft glow.
The hotel is perched at the edge of residential South Park right where a once-booming Broadway bends slightly affording perfect views of vintage theater signs—a nod to its historic heyday. Electric scooters (a transport option that would be risky if not for the plentiful bike lanes) offer fast access to attractions like Grand Central Market, The Broad Museum, The Last Bookstore and the booming Arts District—a hub of galleries, breweries and bars. Across the street sits hilariously named queer weed dispensary Green Qween and nipping at the Hoxton’s heels is nearby competitor the Downtown LA Proper Hotel.
The Hoxton DTLA offers a stylish and surprisingly affordable perch from which to explore downtown and nearby trending hubs like Chinatown and Little Tokyo. What it lacks in beach vibes (the hotel is nearly 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean) it more than makes up for in historic charm, downtown style, and the most enviable walkability score in La La Land.
