In 2007, the film landscape of Los Angeles changed drastically with the opening of Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre, brainchild of L.A. native Hadrian Belove (founder of CineFile Video) and the Harkham family. Belove and his dedicated staff and volunteers have offered up some of the most diverse, wacky and thought-provoking programming in the city. The Cinefamily means something different to everyone who's stood in line under the marquee, raced to claim a couch under the watchful eyes of silent movie legends or cracked a beer on the back patio under the stars post-film. For some, it's a place for parties and pop-culture tributes. For others, an arthouse salon, a venue for contemporary indie films, or a host for events with major international directors. The point is, it can be whatever you want it to be—the mood changes nightly, but the quality and sense of community stay the same. You'll find everything here, from kitschy B movies to punch-proud masterpieces—with fun concessions such as giant cupcakes and coffee—plus lots of special guests and parties.
Recently, they've also started taking their show on the road, organizing occasional off-site events at unusual locations around L.A. If you find yourself becoming a regular, you might consider a membership which, for prices starting at $25 per month, includes free entry to most screenings and programs.

Cinefamily is one of the best things about LA, period. Their wacky programming brings so much joy and weirdness and knowledge, they never take themselves too seriously, except for seriously preserving the art of cinema. The back patio parties are always a blast, and it's the theater I most want to see every movie in, sitting in a room full of likeminded folks who appreciate the place just as much as I do.
Cinefamily! You're amazing. I love the fantastic programs and events that go on here, all the weird, crazy movies I've seen that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere, and the community feel you get snuggled into the theater will other movie lovers. Forget those fancy reclining chairs and order-from-your-seat service at other theaters (OK, maybe don't forget them, but that's for another time and place). —Cinefamily is for people who really love the theater experience, and have a passion for film.
