Catharsis comes in many forms: a charged workout, a moment of zen in the woods or a dramatic social media soliloquy. Add a visit to this Hollywood museum of used hairbrushes and stained T-shirts to that list. The Museum of Broken Relationships, the self-described home for the ruins of love, started as a traveling exhibit back in 2006 before opening a permanent brick and mortar gallery in Croatia in 2010. Rather than dwell on the despair of a relationship's collapse, the museum preserves love's legacy through donated relics.

My absolutely favorite museum. Each item is accompanied by a description by the donator, and they range from a couple words to paragraphs about the demise of the relationship. It's the perfect way to reflect on the lessons learned from the devastation of lost love—or to revel in other people's romantic misfortunes, if that's your idea of a good time.

Just steps away from the tourist hub that is Hollywood and Highland, the Museum of Broken Relationships is nevertheless a worthwhile excursion whether you're a tourist or a Los Angeles resident.  Affecting and poignant, the museum's exhibits are made up of "artifacts" and accompanying explanations (short and long) submitted from around the world.  All meditations on life and love, these pieces represent all kinds of relationships--romantic, familial, etc.  Plan to spend a couple of hours here; the museum is small, but packed with artifacts, and reading each's description takes time.  It's an engrossing experience, and you'll benefit from having time to ponder each work.

This area is heart of tourist Hollywood--parking will be trying.  Taking public transit (the red line is close by) or taxi/ride share is highly recommended.

Surprisingly uplifting. It's wonderful to know you aren't alone, even when you feel like you really are.

i first visited this amazing museum in croatia! i'm so glad it came to LA!

New favorite museum. By far, the most interesting and unique museum I have ever visited. Whether you are a local Angelino, or visiting LA and need an activity to add to the itinerary, I can’t recommend this museum enough. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen and it’s one of two places in the world where you can find it. The other being in Croatia.

Hands down one of the most cathartic and universally engaging museums conceptually. Quite possibly the only thing worth dragging yourself down to Hollywood and Highland for.
