After finally graduating from its status as an upstart, FYF was almost a goner: Sexual assault allegations against its founder had seemingly put the fest at a dead end. But local promoter Goldenvoice has assumed full ownership of the brand and placed fresh female leadership at its helm. Janet Jackson, Future, Florence and the Machine and My Bloody Valentine top this year’s lineup.

FYF is the local festival for LA, growing from a scrappy DIY punk fest held at the Echoplex into a massive celebration of all things pop music. The booking is consistently fantastic - recent headliners have included the likes of Slowdive, D'Angelo, My Bloody Valentine, Run the Jewels and Spiritualized - and the event's logistics only become better each year.
For a hot minute (let's say between 2013 - 2015) FYF was the best local music fest Los Angeles had to offer. Now though, the lineups are getting more and more repetitive — of both themselves and former Coachellas — and the awful layout of Exposition Park makes the festival experience a drag. This is a fest I want to believe in and that I want to be great again, but I'm worried that may never happen.
