One of the things I miss the most about living in Santa Monica is being able to grab a ticket, wait in this always full line and get my Godmother sandwich to go - then eat it overlooking the beach in the late afternoon. This Italian deli/market packs any Italian grocery item you would want, as well as making some of what many Angelenos consider the best sandwich in town.

Their signature sandwich, The Godmother, is probably the best version of the Italian sandwich I've had. Made with house made, perfectly crusty bread, it comes packed with with Genoa salami, mortadella, prosciutto, coppacola, ham, provolone cheese, mild or spicy peppers. It comes with "the works" including lettuce, tomatoes and dressings, and in different sizes. There are no substitutions, and believe me, none are needed.

What I like best about this sandwich is that the flavors seem to develop the longer it sits. The bread is sturdy enough to soak up all the juices, even for a long period of time.

Seriously there is no sandwich/local market even close to as wonderful as Bay Cities. Don't be intimidated by a long line for deli or to have a sandwich made, it goes pretty quickly and it's SO worth the wait!

The "godmother" sandwich says it all but all of the sandwiches are fantastic!! Can't go wrong here but be prepared to wait in line.

As close and authentic to home (Little Italy in NYC) as it can get! Amazing salads, breads, pastas and subs!

This place makes me hate Monday's for two reasons 1) it's Monday 2) they're closed. I have waited in line for the fresh bread, patiently but annoyed. The godmother is a thing of beauty that if you scoff at it in my presence, we might not stay friends. This is the place to go to for legit deli food from heaven.

best bread and sandwiches in LA. I've had over 100 and moved my way thru the menu. My favorites are the house-made roast beef, pastrami, and smoked cracked pepper turkey with The Works - onions and + mixed peppers (hot and mild). Staff and owners are all about great customer service!

The only sandwich you need to try in Los Angeles is The Godmother. Highly recommend ordering online to save time and a headache from the crowds (it gets crazy around lunchtime). Also a great place to stop by if you're on your way to the Santa Monica pier concerts on Thursday nights during the summer - they have everything you can need for a beachside picnic

Great sandwiches! Be ready to get aggressive though.  There's usually a ton of people clamoring to place their order.  As the old saying goes, "Closed mouths don't get fed!"
